Cycle shelters on Merseyside

The county of Merseyside was founded in 1974 and consists of five metropolitan boroughs - Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral. At the heart of the county is the city of Liverpool which was given the award of European City of Culture in 2008. It is believed that Liverpool was founded around the year 1190 but remained a relatively small city until the slave trade boomed in the 1700s.

Today, there's much too see in the regenerated Merseyside on your bicycle with a number of well signed routes now open. Highlights include paths by the River Mersey with cycle paths running along the side of many sections of the river. Part of the Trans Pennine Trail also runs through the county and is well worth a look.

Liverpool's central tourist attractions have been well publicised but Speke Hall is a less well known gem. The atmospheric interior of this rambling house spans many periods. Originally built in 1530, its Great Hall and priest hole date from Tudor times, while the Oak Parlour and smaller rooms, some with William Morris wallpapers, show the Victorian desire for privacy and comfort. There is also fine Jacobean plasterwork and intricately carved furniture. A fully equipped Victorian kitchen and servants’ hall enable visitors to see ‘behind the scenes’. The restored garden has spring bulbs, a rose garden, summer border and stream garden, and there are woodland walks and magnificent views of the Mersey basin and North Wales hills.

Getting on your bike for the journey to work is a also a great way to get fit and healthy. But you can’t expect people to cycle to work if they can’t have a shower or store their bike safely when they get there. That's where employers and organizations can play a part by providing cycle shelters to encourage families to cycle their way to better health. Grants may be available for the provision of bike shelters.
